A framework to evaluate the effectiveness of no-take marine reserves in Mexico

چکیده
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS No-take marine reserves are often implemented to recover overfished stocks. The extent to which these reserves have met their objectives is unclear. Current methods for reserve evaluation are not standardized and rely solely on biological data, excluding the socioeconomic and governance dimensions. Existing frameworks do not provide a tool to perform the analysis. Existing frameworks provide a list of possible indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of MPAs, but they are not specific to no-take reserves and do not describe how to select indicators based on reserve objectives nor provide a tool to analyze these indicators.

A user-friendly tool to evaluate the effectiveness of no-take marine reserves
Marine reserves are implemented to achieve a variety of objectives, but are seldom rigorously evaluated to determine whether those objectives are met. In the rare cases when evaluations do take place, they typically focus on ecological indicators and ignore other relevant objectives such as socioeconomics and governance. And regardless of the objectives, the diversity of locations, monitoring p...
متن کاملIntegration of no-take marine reserves in the assessment of data-limited fisheries
No-take marine reserves show great promise as conservation tools, yet the integration of reserves into assessment models for data-limited fisheries management is just emerging. We develop a framework for integrating marine reserves into two data-limited assessment models: spawning potential ratio (SPR) and yield per recruit (YPR). We use Monte Carlo simulation to test the applicability of the f...
متن کاملShifting Baselines, Marine Reserves, and Leopold's Biotic Ethic
Different human expectations and environmental ethics are key factors preventing the creation of marine reserve networks. People are skeptical about the benefits of no-take marine reserves because they have adjusted to scarcity and have low expectations about the productive capability of marine ecosystems. Pauly (1995) described this as a shifting baseline in which each generation sets its expe...
متن کاملEffectiveness of marine protected areas in the Philippines for biodiversity conservation.
Quantifying the extent to which existing reserves meet conservation objectives and identifying gaps in coverage are vital to developing systematic protected-area networks. Despite widespread recognition of the Philippines as a global priority for marine conservation, limited work has been undertaken to evaluate the conservation effectiveness of existing marine protected areas (MPAs). Targets fo...
متن کاملMarine reserves: size and age do matter.
Marine reserves are widely used throughout the world to prevent overfishing and conserve biodiversity, but uncertainties remain about their optimal design. The effects of marine reserves are heterogeneous. Despite theoretical findings, empirical studies have previously found no effect of size on the effectiveness of marine reserves in protecting commercial fish stocks. Using 58 datasets from 19...
